How to Animate a Control Stick Using 3DMax

After modeling a stick, move the Pivot point down to where your axis will be. Click the Hierarchy tab (1) and push the ‘Pivot’ (2) followed by the ‘Affect Pivot Only’ (3) button. Then using the ‘move’ tool, slide the pivot point to the desired position (4).
Now a dummy object needs to be made to hold one range of motion. Click the ‘Create’ tab (1). Push the ‘Helpers’ button (2), and the ‘Dummy’ button (3). Then create the dummy (4). Positioned the dummy object so that the center of the object is at the fulcrum of the stick. The dummy object will not be seen in the finished product.
OK, now for the animation. Animate the dummy object to rotate fore and aft. Setting keys at 50, 0 and 100. Then animate the stick from left to right. Setting keys at the same positions.
Next attach the two objects. First clicks the ‘Links’ button (1), then click and drag from the stick to the dummy object (2). Note the curser is in draw in the wrong position, just follow the arrows.
Highlight the stick and go to ‘FS Tools’ -> ‘AnimationManager’. The Animation Tool settings are shown here for the sticks left and right movement. Settings are ‘lever_stick_l_r’ and Start ‘0’ End ‘100’. Then click the ‘Create’ button and last ‘Update Sel’.
Last step is to highlight the dummy object and use the Animation Tool as in the previous step. The settings are ‘lever_stick_fore_aft’ and Start ‘0’ and End ‘100’. Click the ‘Create’ button and ‘Update Sel’.
